When planning your ultimate adventure to Mount Rinjani, the very first decision you need to make is choosing your starting point. The two official, most popular entry points are the Sembalun Route and the Senaru Route.
While both routes eventually lead to the spectacular Crater Lake (Segara Anak) and offer breathtaking views, they offer vastly different experiences, terrains, and difficulty levels. In this comprehensive guide by Rinjani Trekking Pro, we will break down everything you need to know to make the right choice.
1. The Sembalun Route: The Path to the Summit
The Sembalun route starts in the Sembalun village, located at an altitude of 1,156 meters above sea level on the eastern side of Mount Rinjani. This is the most popular route for summit chasers.
- The Terrain: The first 6 to 7 hours of the hike take you through a vast, open savanna. While it is relatively flat and less steep initially, the lack of trees means you are fully exposed to the sun.
- The Views: Incredible panoramic views of the rolling green hills and the majestic Rinjani peak looming in the distance.
- Summit Accessibility: Sembalun is much closer to the summit. If your main goal is to reach the 3,726m peak, you must start from Sembalun (especially for the 2 Days 1 Night Summit package).
Pros of Sembalun:
Direct access to the summit, stunning savanna landscapes, and a higher starting elevation which means less total vertical climbing to the crater rim.
Cons of Sembalun:
Very hot and dusty during the dry season due to the lack of forest canopy. The final push to the crater rim (the notorious "Bukit Penyesalan" or Hill of Regret) is extremely steep.
2. The Senaru Route: The Scenic Rainforest
Starting on the northern side of the mountain at an elevation of 601 meters, the Senaru route is the traditional and older path. It is famous for its rich biodiversity and shade.
- The Terrain: You will be hiking through a dense, ancient tropical rainforest. The path is characterized by a steady, relentless upward climb through tree roots and shaded trails.
- The Views: While you don't get the open savanna views, you get a magical, mystical forest experience. The real reward comes when you break through the tree line at Senaru Crater Rim, offering the best unobstructed view of the Segara Anak Lake and the new baby volcano (Mount Barujari).
- Best For: Beginners, nature lovers, and those doing the 2 Days 1 Night Crater Rim trekking without attempting the summit.
Pros of Senaru:
Shaded from the harsh sun, incredible wildlife (including the rare Ebony Leaf Monkey), and hands-down the best view of the crater lake.
Cons of Senaru:
Not ideal for summiting. Starting from a lower altitude means a longer vertical climb. If you want to summit from Senaru, you need at least a 3D2N or 4D3N package.
The Verdict: Which Should You Choose?
Your decision should be based entirely on your physical fitness and your ultimate goal for the trek:
👉 Choose Sembalun if: You are fit, determined to reach the summit, and love vast, open landscapes. We recommend our 3D2N Summit & Lake Package starting from Sembalun.
👉 Choose Senaru if: You want a more relaxed trek, prefer staying out of the direct sun, want the best sunset photos over the lake, or are traveling with family. Our 2D1N Senaru Crater Rim is perfect for this.
