Mount Rinjani is not just a breathtaking volcano; it is a sacred site for the local Sasak and Balinese people, and a vital ecosystem for Indonesia. However, as its popularity has grown, so has the challenge of waste management.
At Rinjani Trekking Pro, we refuse to be part of the problem. We are a team born and raised at the foothills of this mountain, and protecting our "home" is our absolute priority. Here is how we enforce our strict eco-friendly and zero-waste trekking policy.
1. "Pack It In, Pack It Out" Policy
Our rule is simple: everything we bring up the mountain must come back down. Our dedicated team of porters is trained to meticulously collect and separate all organic and non-organic waste generated during your trek.
- We do not leave plastic bottles, wrappers, or cans on the mountain.
- Upon returning to basecamp, our guides must pass a National Park checkpoint where our trash is weighed and verified against our initial inventory.
2. Private Portable Toilet Tents
Human waste is a significant issue on busy trails. To maintain hygiene, protect the groundwater, and provide comfort for our guests, we set up private toilet tents at every campsite.
We dig deep, temporary holes for human waste, ensuring they are located far from water sources (like Segara Anak Lake). Before leaving the campsite, the hole is completely filled and naturally covered, leaving no trace behind.
3. Reducing Single-Use Plastics
We are actively minimizing the use of single-use plastics in our operations. Instead of providing individual small plastic water bottles, we supply large gallons of purified water, allowing you to refill your reusable trekking bottles throughout the journey.
Our meals are prepared using fresh, locally sourced ingredients from the Senaru and Sembalun markets, reducing packaging waste while supporting the local farming community.
How You Can Help as a Trekker
Sustainability is a team effort. When you book a trek with us, we kindly ask you to follow these simple guidelines:
- Bring a reusable water bottle (like a Nalgene or CamelBak).
- Keep your personal trash: Put small wrappers from your personal snacks into your pockets or backpack until you reach the campsite, where our team will dispose of them properly.
- Use eco-friendly toiletries: If you plan to wash your face or use wet wipes, please bring biodegradable options. Avoid using soap directly in the hot springs or lake.
