Mount Rinjani is a photographer's absolute dream. With its dramatic volcanic landscapes, turquoise crater lake, and sweeping views of neighboring islands, every step offers a new postcard-worthy moment. Whether you are a professional with a DSLR or a casual hiker with a smartphone, here are the top 5 spots you cannot miss.
1. The Sembalun Savanna (Golden Hour)
If you take the Sembalun route, your first day will be spent walking through rolling, expansive savanna hills. As the afternoon approaches, the sun casts a warm, golden glow over the tall grass.
Pro Tip: Capture the contrast between the yellow grass and the dark, looming peak of Rinjani in the background. Use a wide-angle lens to capture the vastness of the valley.
2. Plawangan Sembalun Crater Rim (Sunset & Milky Way)
This is where you will camp on your first night before the summit push. Plawangan Sembalun sits right on the edge of the crater. The sunset here is legendary, painting the sky in vibrant pinks and oranges.
Pro Tip: At night, the sky is incredibly clear. Bring a tripod and set your camera to a long exposure (20-30 seconds, ISO 3200+) to capture the spectacular Milky Way directly above your glowing yellow tents.
3. The Summit of Mount Rinjani (3,726m)
The grand prize. You will arrive at the peak just as the sun begins to rise. Looking east, you can see Mount Tambora on Sumbawa island. Looking west, you can see Mount Agung on Bali catching the morning light.
Pro Tip: It is freezing and windy at the summit. Keep your camera batteries warm inside your inner jacket pocket until you are ready to shoot, otherwise, the cold will drain them in minutes!
4. Segara Anak Lake & Mount Barujari
The crescent-shaped crater lake with the smoking "baby volcano" (Barujari) in the center is Rinjani's most iconic view. If you take the 3D2N or 4D3N package, you will camp right by the lake.
Pro Tip: Use the calm morning waters to capture a perfect mirror reflection of the volcano rim and the blue sky.
5. Senaru Crater Rim (Plawangan Senaru)
Often considered the most scenic spot of the entire mountain. The Senaru rim provides an uninterrupted, panoramic view of the lake, the new volcano, and the summit all in one frame. It is surrounded by ancient pine trees covered in mist.
