Top Things to Do in Senaru Basecamp Before Your Trek

At Rinjani Trekking Pro, we always advise our guests to arrive in Senaru Village at least one day before their trek begins. Nestled at an elevation of 600 meters on the northern slopes of Mount Rinjani, Senaru is a cool, lush, and culturally rich village.

Arriving early not only helps you rest after a long flight or boat ride, but it also gives you the chance to explore the hidden gems of northern Lombok. Here are the top things to do in Senaru to warm up your legs.

1. Chase the Magical Waterfalls

Senaru is famous worldwide for housing two of Indonesia's most spectacular waterfalls. Both are located in the same jungle valley, easily accessible from our basecamp.

• Sendang Gile: Just a 15-minute walk down a paved staircase. The two-tiered waterfall is massive and incredibly refreshing.
• Tiu Kelep: A further 30-minute trek through the jungle and across a shallow river brings you to Tiu Kelep. The water crashes down with such force that it creates a natural mist. Local legend says that swimming in its pool will make you look one year younger!

2. Visit the Senaru Traditional Village

Step back in time by visiting the authentic Sasak traditional village. Located just up the road, this small community preserves the ancient way of life of the indigenous Lombok people.

You can see the traditional thatched-roof houses made of bamboo and elephant grass, and learn how the locals weave fabrics and dry their crops. It’s a wonderful cultural experience and a great way to support the local economy.

3. Relax at a Local Coffee Plantation

Lombok produces some excellent, robust coffee. Take an afternoon stroll through the local cacao and coffee plantations. Many small cafes perched on the edge of the valley offer freshly roasted Senaru coffee with unparalleled views of the jungle canopy.
